HISTORY
The Hellenic Ball Hockey Association (HBHA) is a registered non-profit organization. It is officially recognized by the ISBHF (International Street and Ball Hockey Federation) as the governing body of the sport in Greece.
The Association was founded in January 2008 by Co-Presidents John Kontitsis and George Kosmas. Once the Association was formed the first task was to create a committee.
The second order was selecting a qualified and experienced coach to lead our team. An experienced ball hockey individual, that is recognized and respected both as a person, a teacher and player of the game. We definitely had an overwhelming favorite in mind: Gus Kouroussis who John met personally in February 2008 where he offered him the position.
Gus has played competitive ball hockey since the age of 8 and his accollades include winning the Gold while representing Canada as a player in the 2000 World Championships. His knowledge of the game is very apparent and vital towards molding our players and instilling in them a system where team play comes first. Upon accepting the offer, Gus selected Tim Acheson and Alkie Zisidis as his Assistant Coaches. (see coaching staff section for biographies).
Next on our agenda was the long and difficult task of holding evaluation camps. Currently Canada is the only nation that conducts these camps. This step was extremely important towards creating trust and integrity for the HBHA as these camps offered an equal and fair opportunity to all Greek Ball hockey players. The camps took place in hockey hotbeds of Montreal and Toronto and they were run by our coaching staff. It allowed all players the oppurtinity to showcase their talents.
During this process, team committee member Andrew Moshonas, created our website which enabled us to spread word of the camps and, at the same time, allow players as well fans to stay up to date with news and events. We were pleased to have 75 players attend the camps, which were a huge success.
Following these camps, the coaching staff selected 25 players that will represent their Greek heritage in the next World Championships. The HBHA will send its' first ever team to the World Ball Hockey Championships which will be held from June 13-20th 2009 in Pilsen, Czech Republic. (Team Greece attended both the 2005 World Championships in Pittsburgh USA and the 2007 Championships in Germany, however these teams were created and run under a previous organization).
Our committee members and staff have put in countless hours during the short time this association has been put together. Despite all of this, the real work has just begun. The HBHA works closely with all the Greek Communites and businessman that help and sponsor our program. Currently, planning the trip towards Pilsen in 2009 is the top priority and everything from designing the jerseys, obtaining greek citizenships, booking flights and hotels, recruiting trainers down to implementing programs for each player, our committee members are enthusiastically accomplishing the tasks necessary to ensure a succesful trip for the association, the team and players and the ultimate goal: to proudly represent Greece.
